The Pterois volitans, also known as the Volitan Lionfish, is a colorful fish species with varying coloration depending on age and maturity. This species can display red, burgundy, white, and brown to black vertical stripes along its body, along with large pectoral fins and banded spines on its dorsal fin. Interestingly, the Miles Lionfish, a visually similar species, differs from the Volitan Lionfish in terms of its origin, as the former is exclusive to the Indian Ocean and its surrounding regions. With fewer spines on its dorsal and anal fins, the Miles Lionfish can be distinguished from the Volitan Lionfish.
The Black Peacock/Volitan Lionfish (Pterois volitans) has venomous spines on its dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins, which are used for defense. If stung, the resulting pain is similar to a bee sting, but stronger. The venom contains heat-sensitive proteins that break down when exposed to heat, preventing them from entering the bloodstream. In case of a sting, promptly remove any broken spines from the wound and immerse the affected area in hot water (not scalding) for 30 minutes, followed by seeking medical attention. Those with sensitivity to stings should seek medical help immediately.
The Black Peacock Lionfish (Pterois volitans) can grow quickly, reaching an adult size of 15 inches. To accommodate its size and need for shelter, it is recommended to house these fish in a 120 gallon or larger aquarium with plenty of hiding spots. While it may initially hide to adjust to its new environment, it is typically seen out in the open. As a carnivorous species, it may feed on smaller fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans within the tank.
Live saltwater feeder shrimp should be used to initially entice this fish into eating upon introduction to the aquarium. Its diet should consist of meaty foods like live shrimp, fish, and crustacean flesh. With patience and diligence, the Volitan Lionfish can eventually transition to a prepared diet of fresh, uncooked table shrimp, frozen silversides, and frozen squid.
