The Bubble Tip Anemone is a stunning ornamental anemone for home reef aquariums. Under intense lighting, Entacmaea quadricolor grows a unique bulb at the end of its tentacles. It uses its sweeper tentacles to capture food from the water column when hungry, which then shrink and take on a bulbous shape after feeding. While often called the Four-Colored Anemone, each individual can have varying coloration, with some red variations known as Rose Anemones. Bubble Tip Anemones from Fiji and Tonga typically have soft brown, tan, or maroon shades, though green ones can also be found. In contrast, Sri Lankan Bulb Anemones are typically green with a deep maroon base.
The Green Bulb Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) is a widespread species found in oceans worldwide. In the wild, it attaches its pedal disc deep within dead coral or on solid, living reefs. In a home aquarium, this species requires similar habitat and is best positioned among deeply creviced live rock or branchy corals on a sandy substrate. Unlike other anemones, most Green Bulb Anemones prefer to find their own spot to settle and may move around until they find a suitable location. To thrive, the Green Bulb Anemone needs strong lighting in a tank of at least 30 gallons. Under optimal conditions, it can reach up to 1 foot in diameter, although it usually remains compact in size under bright lighting. If the lighting is inadequate, the Green Bulb Anemone will expand its body to absorb as much light as possible. For optimal care, it should be paired with a Clownfish.
Be careful when handling this invertebrate, as well as all Anemones. The Green Bulb Anemone may sting other anemones and corals that invade its territory.
