The Pacific Naso Tang, also known as the Orangespine Unicornfish, undergoes color changes as it matures. Specimens from Hawaii tend to have more vibrant colors compared to those from other regions. Juveniles have a dark gray body with a blue stripe along the dorsal fin and an orange stripe on the anal fin. As it matures, the body turns reddish-brown and additional colors are added to the juvenile stripes. The tail takes on a lyre shape with a yellow vertical bar towards the back, while orange patches appear near the tail spines. The face experiences the most significant transformation, with the development of a thin black mask between the eyes and mouth, outlined in bright yellow. The lips also change to a reddish-orange color. A 180-gallon or larger tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots, as well as a secure lid, is recommended for this species. While it may be aggressive towards other tangs, it generally coexists peacefully with other fish.
Tangs should be provided with a balanced diet that includes both meaty foods and marine-based seaweed and algae. By incorporating dried seaweed tied to a rock or using a veggie clip, they can be fed at least three times a week, which will improve their immune system and decrease aggression.
