Sphaeramia nematoptera, also known as the Pajama Cardinalfish, boasts a vibrant array of colors. Its face is a lively greenish-yellow, its eyes a brilliant orange, and its silver-based body is adorned with striking black accents and charming orange polka-dots. Despite its eye-catching appearance, this species is naturally peaceful and blends seamlessly into any community saltwater aquarium. For optimal care, it is recommended to keep Pajama Cardinalfish in small schools within aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Due to its slow and deliberate swimming style, it is best housed with calm tankmates and provided with plenty of hiding spots among rocks or plants. These fish are often found nestled among sea grass or even blending in with spiny sea urchins.
The Pajama Cardinalfish behaves similarly to other schooling fish, establishing a strict hierarchy when in small groups within the aquarium. However, unlike other social fish, this member of the Apogonidae family does not rely on aggression to assert dominance over other cardinalfish. To maintain their health, a well-balanced diet of meaty foods such as feeder shrimp, flake and pellet foods, marine flesh, bloodworms, and potentially live feeder fish is necessary.
