The Red Base Anemone loves bright lighting, sand or mud substrates, and a mature reef. It needs at least 4” of substrate, though deeper is better. Crushed coral is not recommended; the anemone may injure its foot. Unlike its relative, the Bubble Tip Anemone, it rarely hosts Clownfish but there’s a chance of a symbiotic relationship. The Long Tentacle sports venomous cells in its tentacles which it uses to capture food, sting, and ward off attackers. Sea stars, butterfly fish, and angelfish will try to hunt it, so be vigilant! Moving a lot means the anemone is not comfortable; it seeks a spot to settle and attach its foot. Give it sand and a wide reef. Cover pumps to prevent it from getting caught. It’s also known as the Corkscrew Anemone, and buy only unexposed wild-types; bleach can be fatal.
