This beautiful marine creature is known as the Ring Top Cowrie Snail (Erosaria annulus) due to its striking appearance. This species, also known as the “gold ring Kauri” or “porcelain snail,” is a small tank inhabitant belonging to the shell snails family and is categorized as a cowrie. Its species name “annulus,” meaning “ring,” is derived from its distinct yellow housing ring. The snail can be found in seas around the world, but is most commonly found in the Indo-Pacific. With its strong appetite for debris, it makes an excellent addition to a reef tank as it helps keep the aquarium clean.
The Erosaria annulus, known as the Ring Top Cowrie Snail, has a semi-circular and smooth shell. Its mantle edge extends over the back, creating a visually pleasing pattern. This species can be found in a diverse range of habitats, and is commonly active during daylight hours. Its diet consists of detrius, carrion, and coral growth, making it a valuable addition to coral reefs as it helps maintain the ecosystem’s health.
Captive breeding has proven effective in certain areas, where the female lays and cares for eggs until they hatch. The larvae experience metamorphosis, which can be a complex process. The Goldring Kauri can coexist with other invertebrates and non-aggressive fish when properly grouped. However, care must be taken to avoid snail predators.
