The Royal Damsel, also referred to as the Yellow Belly Blue Damselfish, is a lively marine fish with a distinct blue and yellow coloration. The front of its body displays a vibrant blue shade, while the back, anal fin, and tail are adorned with a brilliant yellow hue. There may be some variation in the amount of yellow on its body across different subspecies. (Note: While some may classify C. parasema as the Azure Damselfish, the aquarium industry considers the Azure Damselfish to be C. hemicyanea.)
For optimal care, it is advised to have a 30 gallon aquarium or larger with ample rockwork and decorations. Due to its ability to withstand below-standard water conditions, this species is a popular choice for novice hobbyists. A small group of young Azure Damsels can provide vibrant colors and excitement to a marine aquarium. When keeping this fish, it is recommended to also have other semi-aggressive species in the tank to prevent territorial behavior as they mature. In larger reef tanks, this should not be an issue if there are enough hiding spots available.
The suggested diet for Azure Damselfish includes high-quality flake foods, frozen meaty options like brine or mysis shrimp, and occasional dried seaweed on a feeding clip.
