The Yellow Stripe Damsel (Neoglyphidodon nigroris) is a visually striking fish that is highly sought after for aquariums. This species initially displays a vibrant yellow hue, accompanied by two black stripes that extend horizontally across its body. However, as it matures, its appearance transforms to a mix of gray and brown towards the front, and a dusky yellow towards the back. Specimens found near Java are known to have even more intense coloring and pointed fins. Various monikers have been given to this damselfish, including Behn’s Damselfish, Black and Yellow Chromis, Blackmouth Chromis, Yellow Honey Chromis, Yellowfin Damsel, and Scarface damsel. With its exquisite appearance and relatively low cost, the Yellow Stripe Damsel is an ideal choice for novice aquarists.
As an omnivore, this damselfish is content with both algae-based and meaty diets. It has a particular fondness for algae and zooplankton, but will not hesitate to consume sponges and tunicates when necessary. While juveniles can coexist in groups, it’s worth noting that aging individuals may become aggressive. For optimal care, it’s advised to house them individually or in a male-female pair. This Black & Gold Damsel requires a minimum tank size of 55 gallons for a single individual or a breeding couple, ensuring sufficient space for thriving. Its streamlined body enables swift movement and thorough exploration of the entire tank. Providing hiding spots within the rock work is recommended to establish a sense of safety.
When choosing tank mates, it is important to exercise caution due to the territorial nature of this damselfish. In a peaceful community tank, this fish may cause disruptions, so selecting tank mates with compatible temperaments is essential. If conflicts do arise, consider removing the Black & Gold Damsel for the sake of the other tank inhabitants.
