The hardy and beautiful Yellowtail Damselfish is widely regarded as the ideal damselfish for aquarists of any experience level. Its bright, jewel-blue body and vibrant yellow tail stand out brilliantly against any backdrop of corals and live rock. Plus, it requires a smaller tank than other Damsels and is less aggressive. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Yellowtails need multiple hiding spots and peaceful tankmates to thrive. Occasional territorial behavior towards its own species or similar-sized fish is possible. To keep multiple Yellowtails, an appropriately sized system of odd-numbered fish is recommended. They’ll feed on zooplankton and algae, plus benefit from a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis and enriched shrimp. Offer several small meals per day for optimal nutrition. Breeding in captivity is possible, however sexing is difficult. Males are usually bigger and more slender and may become territorial and protective of eggs during mating.
